Cyst Removal Burbank California - A cyst is an infection, and requires that the dermatologist drain the contents and sometimes surgically remove the cyst. A cyst (also known as a sebaceous cyst) is a small sealed sac that may contain air, fluids, or be semi-solid. Sebaceous cysts most often arise from swollen hair follicles or skin trauma, which may also cause a cyst to form. A sac of cells is created in which a protein called keratin is secreted. A cyst could go away on its own or may have to be surgically removed. The typical outpatient surgical procedure for a surgical excision of a sebaceous cyst is a simple cyst removal procedure to completely remove the sac and its contents.
Cysts are usually found on the face, neck and body. They are usually slow-growing, painless, freely movable lumps under the skin. Sometimes, however, a cyst will become inflamed and tender.
The following symptoms may be signs of a cyst:
- Redness, tenderness, or increased temperature of the skin over the area
- Gray-white, cheesy, foul smelling material may drain the cyst
- Usually a hard, small lump under the skin
They are smooth to the touch, vary in size, and are generally round in shape.
Steroid medications may also be used to for cyst removal.
