Although the number of skin cancers found in the US ( and elsewhere) has been steadily climbing these last 20-30 years, most are now found much earlier ( and therefore smaller). Much of the reason for this is increased awareness of the average person about skin cancer causes and appearance. The American Academy of Dermatology, the American Cancer Society and other national and local organizations have banded together to host skin cancer screenings in shopping malls and medical facilities as well as placing print ads in many newspapers and magazines around the country about this very important medical issue.
If you have not had a full body dermatology exam in the last year looking for any irregular skin growth, it is recommended you visit your local dermatologist to have this done. He/she can then alert you to any problems and, more likely, alleviate any undue concern on your part about your moles. If you have a family history of skin cancer, you probably should be doing this exam every year.
